Collaboration in Music

Interim Project Report:
27 July 2000

We have completed most of what we set out to do. With our workstudy students, we held several meetings on each campus, developed a number of educational units and CSound programs for use in class next spring. Unit include Additive Synthesis, AM Synthesis, FM Synthesis, Granular Synthesis,a nd direct work with Sound Files. Each unit includes a discussion of the synthesis scheme, a unit generator graphics, example CSound Score and Orchestra Code, and a sound file of the example.

The rough version of the web site is functional, but we are waiting for a graphics program that will allow us to add unit generator charts to each synthesis unit. Once that arrives, we will finish the website.

All of this went smoothly with the exception of the cross-platform issues. We ran into many problems with Windows 95 vs. 98 vs NT and how each version treated the orchestra and score files. Many of the current text editor place hidden character or artifacts into the CSound files that create fatal errors. We have resolved these issues and have a FAQ list that we can use in class next spring.
