Greek Drama Today
Abstract:
The Classics departments of the College of Wooster, Denison University, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, and Ohio Wesleyan University will collaborate on a project centered around the production of Aristophanes’ play, Thesmophoriazusae, which is scheduled to be performed at Case Western University in February 2001. We plan to incorporate study of the play into the curricula of courses on all five campuses in the fall semester of 2000 and the spring semester of 2001. The director of the production, Professor Mary Kay Gamel, Visiting Professor of Classics at Case Western University and a nationally-known expert on the production of Greek drama, will visit four of the campuses during the fall (the students from Kenyon’s courses will come to Oberlin for Professor Gamel’s visit), to talk to classes about her production and about the performance of Greek drama. In preparation for these visits, classes from the different campuses will meet together, exchanging ideas about the play and comparing their approaches to material. In February, students and faculty from classes in all five colleges will attend a performance of the play and a workshop following the performance at Case Western University. Students and faculty will study the play in various courses in the second semester. The faculty participants will meet at Gambier in May to discuss the outcome of the project.
